Cops: Suspect in New York City sucker-punch video arrested

NEW YORK - Police say they have arrested the man caught on video punching another man in the face, sending him to the hospital in critical condition, reports CBS New York.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was taken into custody in New Jersey, according to the station. Charges are pending.

The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Manhattan. Sources told CBS New York it started when the man stepped over 55-year-old Paul Martone's dog, sparking an argument. The suspect is captured on video punching Martone in the face.

In the video, the victim falls backwards and hits his head on the street pavement while the suspect runs off, carrying what police said appeared to be a bike chain.

"I saw this man with a bike chain running that way down 56th Street, like a bat out of hell, and I thought, 'Oh no, that's can't be good,'" witness Denis Hyland told the station. "Then I... saw the guy [Martone] lying in the street."

Police are also investigating whether or not the same man harassed a woman at a bike rental stand in Central Park two weeks ago, according to CBS New York.
