Colorado woman accused of killing newborn found in backyard
HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — Police have arrested a Colorado woman and accused her of the murder of a newborn baby who was found in a backyard with its umbilical cord still attached, reports CBS Denver.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that deputies were called around 9:48 p.m. Tuesday on a report of a baby found lifeless. Camille Wasinger-Konrad, 23, was arrested soon after.
It is not clear if she lives at the residence where the baby was found. Authorities did not release the baby's gender or say how long the baby may have been dead before being discovered.
Wasinger-Konrad is currently being housed in the Douglas County Detention Center without bond.
The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Douglas County Coroner's Office.The sheriff's office has asked prosecutors to charge Wasinger-Konrad with first-degree murder.
In the statement, the sheriff's office noted that Colorado's "Safe Haven" law allows parents to give infants up to 72 hours old to an employee at any fire station or hospital without fear of prosecution, unless the baby appears to have been harmed.
