Officials release new information in death of Calif. student

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Charges of capital murder were filed Monday against a Long Beach, Calif. man in connection with the death of a California State University-Northridge student, according to CBS Los Angeles.

Officials say Abdullah Abdullatif Alkadi, who disappeared on Sept. 17, was meeting with Agustin Rosendo Fernandez to discuss the possible sale of his car. Alkadi's body was found last Thursday and police arrested Fernandez the same day.

Fernandez, 28, is scheduled to be arraigned Monday afternoon on one count of murder - with the special circumstances of murder during a robbery and murder during a carjacking, CBS Los Angeles reported.

"The complaint also alleges personal use of a deadly weapon -- a knife," a spokesperson from the district attorney's office told the station.

Alkadi's murder is being investigated by the Robbery-Homicide division of the Los Angeles Police Department. The special circumstances allegations made by prosecutors make Fernandez eligible for the death penalty, according to the station.

Originally from Saudi Arabia, the victim's body will be flown back home Thursday where he will be buried.

"He was like any other college kid, into cars, meeting new friends," his cousin, Mohammed Alomir, told the station. "We are very devastated. We just hope justice will be served."

The state plans to ask that Fernandez be held without bail. It was unclear whether additional suspects would be charged with Alkadi's murder, reports the station.
