Motorcyclists plow through Union City, N.J. accident scene, hit cops, police say

UNION CITY, N.J. -- Three police officers in New Jersey were struck and injured when, authorities say, a pair of motorcycles barreled through an earlier accident scene.

Authorities say the officers were hit Wednesday night in Union City. It happened while they were investigating a crash involving a teen who had been struck by a garbage truck and killed.

It was unclear whether the 16 year old was walking or riding a bicycle, reports CBS New York.

Authorities say one of the motorcyclists fled, and the other crashed at the scene.

The New Jersey State Policemen's Benevolent Association wrote on Twitter late Wednesday that the officers had been taken to area hospitals. Authorities say they are expected to survive. The PBA asked people to "please pray for all the officers injured."

The motorcyclist who crashed was hospitalized and was expected to survive, prosecutors told CBS New York.

"They just completely brushed through, and it was insane, because they were I think trying to take this person's body out of this garbage truck, and then this happened, and they had to immediately respond to that, and it was just so crazy to like watch as it happened," witness Christian Ugaz recalled for CBS New York.

"They came out unexpectedly, and they just crashed into the police officers at the scene," said witness Angel Solorzano. "I saw like three victims on the floor."
