Nick Jonas: I commend Zayn Malik for leaving One Direction

If there's one person who understands what it's like to be in a boy band -- it's Nick Jonas.

The one-time Jonas Brothers member commented this week about Zayn Malik's decision to leave One Direction.

"It's always tough," he told E! News. "You know, there's never an easy time to make a decision like that. I commend him for doing what he feels is right for him and you got to stay true to yourself."

Jonas, 22, knows what it feels like. In the fall of 2013, Jonas and his brothers, Kevin and Joe, decided to disband their trio.

"I feel for the One Direction fans and I hope they're doing OK," Jonas said, "but you know, it's one of those things, that sometimes it's just time to close a chapter."

Since closing the Jonas Brothers chapter, Jonas has put out solo music, taken on some acting roles and showed off his abs.

For his part, Malik, 22, says he's planning to "write" and "chill."
