Is Hollywood no longer strictly a man's world?
Female-led films dominate at the box office 03:16

The sci-fi action movie "Insurgent" topped the box-office charts, making $54 million in ticket sales last weekend, and joining "Cinderella" and "Fifty Shades of Grey" to become the top three live-action movie openings of 2015.

All three of the films notably have female leads, and most of the ticket-buyers were also women. Combined with the fact that male-led movies have been bombing so far this year, it begs the question: Is Hollywood no longer a man's world?

New York Times business editor Peter Lattman thinks this trend is all about quality. It is not necessarily due to the three highest-grossing films of the year having female leads, he said, but that they have greater appeal to the audience. Whether they are a global phenomenon like "Fifty Shades" or a great re-make of an American classic like "Cinderella," the films stand out to moviegoers.

On the other hand, the male-oriented films that have been recently released, like "Jupiter Ascending" or "Chappie," have received poor reviews and garnered less interest.

"You are starting to see more movies being created that are geared toward women," Lattman said.

Studies show that men are becoming more distracted by things such as YouTube clips and sports, while women remain loyal to opening weekends.

Perhaps the film industry is simply following suit.

That being said, there are numerous male-oriented movies set to be released in 2015 that will likely get back some of this lost attention, such as the latest installment of the "Fast and the Furious," "Mission: Impossible" and "Avengers" franchises.

Only time can tell.
