What to watch in August: Netflix, Hulu, HBO and Amazon Prime
August is right around the corner, bringing the dog days of summer with it. Luckily, the top TV and movie streaming services are back with a whole new crop of content to help you beat the heat.
Take a peek at some of the top new August selections from Hulu, Netflix, HBO Now and Amazon Prime.
"Difficult People," a Hulu Original: August 5
Amy Poehler, comedy goddess of the Internet, is the executive producer of a new series named "Difficult People," a new comedy on Hulu. Watch Billy Eichner and Julie Klausner embody the cringe-worthy, hilariously entitled "difficult people" we've all met, and beware: The trailer will make you cry from laughter and faux schadenfreude.
"The Hotwives of Las Vegas" Season 2, a Hulu Original: August 18
Hulu is doubling down on the "Hotwives" comedy series, this time moving the campy satire of "The Real Housewives" out to Las Vegas for another round of backstabbing, debauchery and sitcom meltdowns. Look for hilarious performances from Kristen Schaal, Casey Wilson and Andrea Savage.
"Doctor Who," Season 8: August 8
The Doctor comes stateside, bringing with him a series full of dubious morality, dark twists and a new direction for the show. Peter Capaldi tackled the divisive role of The Doctor like only he could. Fans are obsessed with this new dynamic, so be sure to catch up before season 9 premieres on BBC in September.

"Narcos," a Netflix Original: August 28
Netflix is doubling down on originals. "Narcos" is the story of Pablo Escobar, a Colombian drug lord known as "The King of Cocaine," and the DEA agents who brought him down. The trailer is dark, violent and epic in scope. If Netflix learned anything from "House of Cards," this series is going to bring the bloody rise of the Medellín Cartel to new storytelling heights. Binge watch all the episodes August 28.
"The Hurt Locker," August 1
In case all his acrobatics in "The Avengers" made you forget, Jeremy Renner once starred in this movie about a fearless bomb disposal expert. And also in case you forgot, "The Hurt Locker" won six Academy Awards, A Director's Guild of America Award, Five Awards from the Boston Society of Film Critics, the list goes on. Relive this classic and relive why history will look back at "The Hurt Locker" as one of Renner's best performances.
"Club de Cuervos," a Netflix original, August 7
Back with the originals, Netflix is taking "Club de Cuervos" in a different direction. After the sudden death of a family patriarch, a battle erupts between his heirs for control of his legendary professional soccer team. This Spanish-language original will drag friends, family and the players themselves through the drama and hilarity that follows. Catch all 13 episodes August 7.

"True Detective" Season 2 Finale, August 9
"True Detective": the TV show we hate to love and love to hate, yet somehow every episode is watched and critiqued obsessively. This season is more unpredictable than Donald Trump's presidential campaign, making us all hope the season finale will somehow pull everything together into an epic capstone. With bated breath, we hope.
"Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)," August 1

"The Theory of Everything," August 15
Theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking is more than just his robotic voice and motorized wheelchair. "The Theory of Everything" is first and foremost a love story, an adapted tale of Hawking's rise into fame and his descent into Lou Gehrig's disease. An award-winning performance from Eddie Redmayne brings life to a man you only thought you knew. Yes, you will cry.

"Mad Max Fury Road," August 11

"Timbuktu," August 22
In this foreign film, a group of radical jihadis threaten the diversity and way of life in the legendary Malian city of Timbuktu. In a dramatic and poignant metaphor, director Abderrahmane Sissako takes us into the nature of bigotry, tradition and radicalism that is more relevant than ever. Make sure you set aside some time to contemplate this powerful film once you've seen it.
"Curb Your Enthusiasm," Seasons 1-8, August 6
"Curb Your Enthusiasm" is the spiritual sequel to "Seinfeld." Larry David brings ridiculous, exaggerated melodrama to the screen like only he knows how, and the result is another show about nothing that's perfect for the "Parks and Rec" generation of comedy.
