The number one reason Julianne Hough won't stop moving

Julianne Hough knows a thing or two about staying active and keeping in shape.

The 27-year-old actress, singer and dancer is best known from her time on ABC's "Dancing with the Stars." These days though, she's decided to put down her judging scoreboard, opting instead for more work on what she calls "personal projects."

In addition to being an ambassador for Fitbit Alta, she recently launched a line of athletic wear in collaboration with MPG Sport. Hough talked with CBS News to share more about what else she has in store.

On why she wanted to get into the athleisure business:

"I've wanted to do an athleisure line for six or seven years now. I was looking around and didn't find anything that I thought quite connected with me and what was authentic to me and my dance background. I'd describe it as a very versatile mix of some sporty and some more lifestyle. I wanted quality pieces that were not going to break the bank. I feel like MPG was already really fantastic so we collaborated, connected and for me really made what I was envisioning."

On what her line represents:

"I feel like it's the everyday woman who maybe wants to push herself a little bit and try new things. I have a lot of basic common pieces with black and gray, but then also a lot of fun prints and color. Wearing bright colors makes me feel cheerful and confident and a little bit more fun and fashionable."

On staying confident and positive:

"I think honestly I like that better than the alternative. I'd rather live positive, happy and feeling inspired than feeling negative, not confident and self-conscious. I'm not saying I don't have those days, but I think it's a choice. It's more of a choice of how I want to live my life and how am I going to have the best freaking day ever."

On dealing with the negative attention women in media oftentimes are faced with:

"I think when you're in your head, you're dead. The more I think about those things I'm just frustrated and overwhelmed. I just try to be active and keep my mind still and my body moving. When my body is still and my mind is moving, that's when I get a little more self-conscious. I feel like we live in a society where our bodies are more still and our minds are crazy. My relief is actually when I workout or do something that makes me feel active and present. When I'm present I can start my day and I'm in a positive energy."

On the opportunities available for dancers today:

"I think there is always more work to be done. There has been so many more opportunities though. If you look back 10 years ago the highest level of a dancer was to be a backup dancer for an artist. Now, dancers are winning their own reality TV shows and are really showcasing their talent, not just backing someone up."

On what's next for her career:

"I'm focusing on film and TV on the acting side. That's why I decided not to come back as a judge (On Dancing with the Stars) because I really wanted to focus on my personal career. I'm excited about my athleisure line, working with Fitbit and doing things authentic to me to keep going. I want to keep developing and creating things that I feel like are authentic to me. Just feel like I'm creating and stepping outside the box a bit."
