Hugh Jackman tweets selfie warning about skin cancer
Hugh Jackman has a message for everyone about the importance of wearing sunscreen.
The actor shared a photo of himself on Twitter with a bandage on his nose, along with the message: "An example of what happens when you don't use sunscreen. Basal cell. Mildest form of cancer. USE SUNSCREEN PLEASE !!"
This isn't the first time the X-Men star has spoken out about his skin cancer diagnosis. Jackman was previously treated for basal cell carcinoma in 2013 and 2014 -- and posted similar warnings on social media urging others to learn from his mistakes.
According to the American Cancer Society, basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer and the most common type of cancer in all humans. About 8 out of 10 skin cancers are basal cell carcinomas.
In these cases, the affected cells are those that produce new skin cells as old ones die off. These cancers usually develop on areas that are more sun-exposed than others, such as the head and neck.
Basal cell carcinoma is rarely fatal. It tends to grow slowly, so it is unlikely to spread to other parts of the body. However, if left untreated, the cancer can grow into nearby areas, including the bone or other tissues beneath the skin.
Basal cell carcinoma often presents as a waxy bump, though it can take other forms.
To help protect against skin cancer, he American Academy of Dermatology recommends everyone wear broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day you will be outside, even on cloudy days.
The organization suggests checking your body regularly for signs of skin cancer and seeing a board certified dermatologist if you notice anything changing, itching, or bleeding on your skin.
