Carol Burnett to star in new sitcom from Amy Poehler

Amy Poehler is bringing Carol Burnett, one of comedy’s most renowned idols, back to television.

Burnett is set to star in an untitled sitcom by executive producer Amy Poehler for ABC, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The show will be about a family who gets an amazing deal on the house of the dreams, so long as they live with current owner until she passes away. Burnett will play the eccentric owner. Former “Mad Men” and “Murphy Brown” writer Michael Saltzman will be writing the pilot.

Poehler will serve as executive producer through her production company, Paper Kite.

Best known for her work on “The Carol Burnett Show” and the movie “Annie,” Burnett has been nominated for Emmys 22 times and and won six times over her career, starting with a win in 1962 for “The Garry Moore Show.” She has also won five Golden Globes and a Peabody, among numerous other honors.

Burnett has made numerous guest appearances on television series over the years -- most recently on CBS’s “Hawaii Five-0” -- but the untitled sitcom marks her first time as a series regular “Carol & Company” went off the air in 1991.
