5. U2 releases new album, "Songs of Innocence"

We knew Apple had planned to unveil details about the new iPhone 6, but we didn't expect that rock band U2 would somehow be involved in the highly-anticipated announcement.

On Tuesday, U2 revealed that all customers with iTunes accounts could download the 11-song "Songs of Innocence" for free.

"We wanted to make a very personal album," U2 frontman Bono told Rolling Stone the day before the Apple event. "Let's try to figure out why we wanted to be in a band, the relationships around the band, our friendships, our lovers, our family. The whole album is first journeys -- first journeys geographically, spiritually, sexually. And that's hard. But we went there."

Not everyone was thrilled with the free album, though. Some customers see it as an unwelcome aggressive marketing tactic.

Several Internet commenters pointed out that Perry lured some backup dancers away from Swift's tour earlier this year. Hmm...Swift certainly keeps us guessing with her lyric references.
