Mel Gibson returns to directing with the WWII film "Hacksaw Ridge"

Oscar season is clearly on its way.

In his first directorial outing since 2006's "Apocalypto," Mel Gibson gets back behind the camera with "Hacksaw Ridge," a true-life World War II drama about one man's struggle to serve his country and maintain his principles.

Former "Spider-Man" star Andrew Garfield plays Desmond Doss, a conscientious objector and army medic who served on the front lines in Okinawa without a weapon. Doss single-handedly evacuated wounded soldiers from behind enemy lines and was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

"Hacksaw Ridge" will hit theaters November 4, 2016.
