Nicole Kidman opens up about father's death

Nicole Kidman gets personal about her father's recent death during a visit to "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," airing Thursday.

The 47-year-old actress lost her father, psychologist father Tony Kidman, last month at age 75. He died Sept. 12 while visiting his other daughter, Antonia, in Singapore.

She previously posted a message on Facebook thanking fans for their support, but in this new interview Kidman opens up about how much it means, noting that it's helpful to talk about grief.

"I've realized we don't talk about it enough in terms of our society," she said about losing loved ones. "Everybody loses their parents and it's awful. I'm sorry to bring everything down, but I'm at the same time trying to navigate through something right now. And I'm amazed when people reach out, because it's an awkward thing at times, but to have people go, 'I'm so sorry for your loss -- the power of that, and even a note or anything, which I've gotten so much love from people."

"There's something about when you realize that someone has gone through a similar thing or is going through a similar thing, it really connects you," she added.

Kidman said she relied on her husband, country star Keith Urban, for support, saying, "When you have your partner who just literally carries you through a tough time -- he's been amazing to me."

Kidman has been doing press in support of her new movie, "Before I Go to Sleep," in theaters on Friday.
