Adorable video: Baby hears mom for the first time

Baby Elijah Cook came into the world at the start of the new year, and was diagnosed shortly after with severe hearing loss. Because both sides of his family have a history of hearing problems, his mom and dad worried their child would never be able to hear their voices or his own.

Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, where Elijah was born, referred the family to Children's Speciality Center, part of the Children's Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota. Audiologists further evaluated the extent of the infant's hearing loss.

On March 5, audiologist Lori Johnson fitted Elijah -- then 9 weeks old -- with tiny hearing aids. Johnson's job is to ensure the littlest patients don't miss out on the sounds around them. She's helped children as young as just 2 weeks old.

The video above captures the moment Elijah heard his mother for the first time.
