Police officer wounded, suspect killed in Fort Worth shooting

FORT WORTH, Texas -- A Fort Worth police officer was wounded during a confrontation with a gun-wielding man who was shot and killed Thursday evening, CBS Dallas reported.

Police told reporters late Thursday that officers were conducting a welfare check at a home on Hildring Drive in East Fort Worth around 6:45 p.m. when they were confronted by a 40-year-old man with a gun.

The man allegedly shot at police, hitting the sergeant at least once. Officers returned fire and killed him. The suspect's name has not been released.

The wounded officer, a sergeant who's 19-year veteran of the department, was in stable condition at Harris Methodist Hospital and undergoing surgery.

Fort Worth Police Chief Rhonda Robertson said the officer was not believed to have life threatening injuries and was in stable condition.

When asked how many times the officer was shot and where on his body he was hit, the chief said, "We do believe he has one gunshot wound. There may be others."

"We all do this job for the love of the job and for the love of the community, and we all know what can happen," police corporal Tracey Knight told reporters. "But it is painful every time it [an officer-involved shooting] happens, across the country, and it is especially when it happens here at home."
