MARYSVILLE, Wash. -- Police say a student walked into the cafeteria at Marysville-Pilchuck High School Friday morning, and opened fire. Two people were killed, including the gunman, Marysville, Wash. police said.

The gunman has been identified as Jaylen Fryberg, a 14-year-old freshman. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

A federal law enforcement official tells CBS News that police are performing a trace on a Beretta 40-caliber handgun, which they believe is the weapon used in the shooting. Police said they have the weapon and are attempting to determine its place of purchase.

Four other young people were wounded, according to an official at Providence Regional Hospital in Everett, Wash.

Three victims, two female and one male, were being treated at Providence Regional Hospital, and are in critical condition with head wounds, a hospital spokeswoman said. The other victim, a male, was transferred to Harborview Hospital with less severe injuries.

Marysville Police Commander Robert Lamoureux said police received a 911 call reporting shots on campus around 10:30 a.m.

Police believe the gunman acted by himself in the attack.

After the shooting, some students were seen being evacuated from the school, walking out and across a nearby field with their hands up. Others were told to stay inside classrooms.

Some were bused to a nearby church, and police asked that parents not try to approach the school.

A federal official says it is no longer an active shooting scene, but police continue to work through the building.

CBS affiliate KIRO reports that the high school has in the range of 2,500 students.
