Retrospective

“60 Minutes” first met Barack Obama 10 years ago, when he was in his first term as a U.S. senator from Illinois and launching an unlikely campaign for the presidency. Sitting down with Steve Kroft, President Obama looks back at eight years in the White House; his successes, failures and what he learned from his two terms as the nation’s chief executive and commander-in-chief.

“Severity of partisanship”

As his administration draws to a close, the president who vowed to unite Republicans and Democrats conceded that the political divide was a bigger obstacle than he thought it would be. “I was surprised and -- and continue to be surprised by the severity of partisanship in this town,” the president said.

Backlash boycott

After Donald Trump’s Twitter attacks on civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis, more legislators are planning to boycott the president-elect’s inauguration, citing his feud with the Georgia Democrat as the last straw. Several announced their plans on social media, including a Wisconsin representative who offered a particularly scathing critique of Mr. Trump.

Inauguration security

Donald Trump will be inaugurated as president in just four days, but security preparations and planning have been underway for months. Inaugurations are always difficult to police, but this year in Washington is going to be different thanks to a vast web of potential threats.

Winter storms

A winter weather alert remains in effect for much of the central U.S., as a deadly ice storm continues its slow trek through the region. At least six deaths have been reported and thousands are without power. The system wreaked havoc on the roads, and caused hundreds of cancellations and delays at airports.

Political satire

“Saturday Night Live” offered its comedic take over the weekend on Donald Trump’s first press conference since the election. The president-elect fired back yesterday on Twitter, again, but for decades, American presidents have had to get used to being the butt of comedians’ jokes.
