Former NHL player Aaron Ward charged with assaulting wife
CARY, N.C. -- Former National Hockey League defenseman Aaron Ward was arrested Friday and charged with assault on a female, reports CBS affiliate WRAL.
Ward, who is currently an analyst for The Sports Network in Canada, was arrested at his home in Cary, North Carolina. According to police, Ward's wife called 911 after the two had a confrontation around 1 p.m.
Ward was also charged with interfering with emergency communication, because he allegedly took his wife's phone, according to the warrant for his arrest.
Under North Carolina law, anyone arrested on a domestic violence charge is held for 48 hours before bail is set. Ward will spend that time at the Wake County jail, WRAL reports.
Ward played nearly two decades in the NHL, spending most of his career with the Carolina Hurricanes and the Detroit Red Wings, before retiring in 2010.
