Manhunt after shots fired at unmarked police car with deputy inside

DEWITT, N.Y. -- Two suspects are being sought after several shots were fired at an unmarked police cruiser near the Le Moyne College campus Monday night, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.

CBS Syracuse, N.Y. affiliate WTCH reports the shooting prompted a massive police presence in the area.

Deputies say the incident began while a sheriff’s deputy in an unmarked vehicle was doing surveillance as part of an investigation.

The detective was approached by two men who began firing at the vehicle, then fled on foot through a nearby parking lot, the sheriff’s office says, adding that the deputy  was nearly hit by the bullet and was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

Le Moyne College sent out an alert to students and faculty warning them to avoid the area of the shooting.

Police were going door-to-door, seeking the suspects.

This isn’t the first shooting in the vicinity, WTCH says. At the end of September 2016, a Syracuse University student was shot and killed nearby.
