Second person killed by lightning in Rocky Mountain National Park

A man was killed by lightning Saturday in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, officials said. It was the second lightning strike fatality in two days at the park.

Four others were also injured and hospitalized, park spokesman Kyle Patterson said in a statement.

The strike happened around 3:50 p.m. near the Rainbow Curve area of the park along Trail Ridge Road, which runs near the Ute Crossing Trail, where lightning struck a woman, Rebecca R. Teilhet, 42, Friday, killing her and injuring seven others.

An air ambulance was able to land in the turbulent weather, but Teilhet died on the scene. Her husband and a friend were taken by ambulance to Estes Park Medical Center. The others were part of a local hiking group. They transported themselves to the facility.

Both incidents occurred during heavy monsoon rains that have drenched parts of Colorado, The Denver Post reported. Some downpours have produced as much as an inch of rain within a 20-minute period.

The National Weather Service said Friday's death was the first in Colorado caused by lightning this year.

Patterson said the last lightning fatality that occurred in Rocky Mountain National Park was in 2000, when a technical climber was struck on the Diamond on Longs Peak.

No further information was released about the man killed Saturday or the other injured parties.
