Reported sighting of U.Va. student on night she vanished

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Police are adjusting their search area for a missing University of Virginia student after getting a new report of a possible sighting the night she disappeared.

The reported sighting comes as police release new surveillance images of 18-year-old Hannah Graham in the hours before she vanished.

Graham was last seen between 11 p.m. Friday night and 1 a.m. Saturday morning near the Camden Plaza Apartments in Charlottesville, reports CBS affiliate WCAV.

Friends said the second-year student was on her way to a party, but never showed up, reports the station. She last had contact with friends via a text message at 1:20 a.m., saying she was lost in the area of 14th and Wertland streets, reports the Daily Progress.

Charlottesville police Capt. Gary Pleasants said Tuesday that the tip prompted authorities to move the search area farther east, though he could not provide details about the possible sighting. Police searched a large area northeast of the university on Monday and found no trace of Graham.

Pleasants said authorities were making plans at midday Tuesday to resume the search. Virginia State Police and the Albemarle County Sheriff's Office were assisting.

Charlottesville police spokesman Lt. Ronnie Roberts told the paper police had received about 60 tips so far in the case, and encouraged anyone with information to call in.

"You may think it's not important, but if you have any information - any at all - please call," Roberts told the paper.

In an expanded search, law enforcement agencies are reportedly combing about 30 blocks in Charlottesville using bloodhounds, but so far, there's been no sign of the teen. Volunteers worked late into the night Monday canvassing the area, and resumed Tuesday morning.

"We have a trained search and rescue team," Guy Williams of the Albemarle County Sheriff's Office told the station.. "We're just hoping and praying that we find this young lady alive and well."

Graham was reported missing Sunday afternoon.

Police describe Graham as a white female, about five feet, 11 inches tall with a skinny build. She has blue eyes, light brown hair and freckles. She was last seen wearing a black crop top with mesh cutouts.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Charlottesville Police Department at 434-970-3280 or CrimeStoppers at 434-977-4000.
