Poll: Hillary Clinton would lead Bill de Blasio in New York mayoral race
Hillary Clinton would dominate a hypothetical race for mayor of New York City against incumbent Mayor Bill de Blasio if she were to run as an independent, according to a Quinnipiac University survey released Wednesday.
The poll found that 49 percent would back Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, while only 29 percent would support de Blasio, a Democrat.
Clinton, a resident of Chappaqua, New York, north of the city, has never indicated that she would want to run for elected office again.
Forty-five percent said they approve of de Blasio’s job while 46 percent said they disapprove. Forty-nine percent even said that de Blasio doesn’t deserve to be reelected and 42 percent said he does deserve it.
In a Clinton-de Blasio matchup, 61 percent of Democrats said they would support Clinton compared to 29 percent for de Blasio and she would lead among independents, with 45 percent support.
The survey also found that while de Blasio would lead among Republicans, Clinton would lead among men, women, black, white and Hispanic voters.
The poll comes after the New York Post wrote in an editorial earlier this month that, “New York City needs Hillary Clinton to run for mayor.”
The survey polled 1,138 voters between Jan. 11 and 17 with a 3.6 percentage point margin of error.
