Grim end to search for tot near Big Four Ice Caves in Washington State

VERLOT, Wash. -- The body of a 6 year-old boy was recovered Sunday evening from the area around the Big Four Ice Caves in Verlot, northeast of Seattle, reports CBS Seattle affiliate KIRO-TV.

Search crews with the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office said they were looking for a child who went missing around 6 p.m. Sunday near the trails that lead to the caves.

After more than two hours of searching, the boy was located, but he was deceased, authorities said. Details were limited.

The trail to the popular spot east of Granite Falls, Washington, reopened Friday with new warning signs. The trail had been closed since July 6, when rock and ice fell and killed a 34-year-old California woman. Five other people were injured, including the woman's brother, who died of his injuries in October.

Three people have died in cave collapses over the past five years.
