Celebrities and members of the fashion world are paying tribute to iconic designer Oscar de la Renta who died Monday at 82.

He was a fashion giant whose designs became a standard of elegance. Widely called "the sultan of chic," his clothes became the garments of choice for some of the best dressed and most beautiful women in the world.

Some of those women are remembering the fashion designer, including actress Jennifer Garner, who was often seen in his designs. During an Elle magazine event in Los Angeles, she said, "He was just gracious and elegant and a gentleman. Mr. De la Renta loved women. And you saw it in every design that he did. He honored women's features, he honored our bodies. He wasn't afraid to pull back and let the woman be the star of the look. And I was just lucky to get to wear his designs and get to know him a little bit, just the tiniest bit, as a person."

Tina Fey, who attended the same event, added, "The beauty of those clothes, I think they really define sort of American style. ... It's a feminine but clean, strong line - just beautiful, beautiful dresses."

"Oscar was a couturier, an artist, a gentleman, a true Renaissance man...his voice will continue to sing in our hearts," said designer Diane von Furstenberg.

Nancy Reagan released the following statement: "America has lost a brilliant, enduring talent and a true gentleman. Oscar was a fashion legend but he was also my friend for nearly fifty years. I admired him greatly as a kind, gracious individual with a generous spirit who brought beauty and elegance to everything he touched."
