Hostage standoff ends peacefully at Columbus, Ohio, home

A man who had threatened to shoot police officers if they tried to enter the Columbus, Ohio, home where he was holed-up with five children early Monday morning has surrendered, reports CBS affiliate WBNS in Columbus.

The incident began at approximately 2 a.m. Eastern when police responded to a call about domestic violence. WBNS says police were able to get a woman who was also in the home to safety, but the children remained inside.

It wasn't immediately clear what connection the suspect, who claimed to be armed, had to the children or the woman who escaped the home. The children being held were between 5 and 11 years of age.

Negotiators say the man had barricaded a window with a mattresses to stop communication with police around 6:00 a.m. Negotiations continued a short time later when officers started using bullhorns and a telephone to try and get him to surrender. Police say the man also used the kids to talk with negotiators.
