Pregnant Chicago mother of 5 killed in early morning freeway shooting

Police in Chicago are trying to piece together a shooting that took place on the city's Dan Ryan Expressway early Wednesday that claimed the life of a 24-year-old woman who was five months pregnant and who was the second sibling in her family to fall victim to gun violence.

Officials say Jasmine Sade Curry, a mother of five children, was found shot to death around 4 a.m. by Illinois state troopers. She was discovered in a Dodge minivan with a gunshot wound to the head. The vehicle sat on the expressway's southbound shoulder.

Illinois State Police Capt. Luis Gutierrez said two other passengers in the vehicle were unharmed, but one ran away, according to CBS Chicago. He believes the incident was isolated, but Curry's father, Pierre believes she may have been targeted because her younger brother, Pierce, 17, was gunned down last August, while sitting in the back of a parked vehicle.

"I think she was targeted. I'll be honest, because her little brother was murdered last year around this area. In my heart, my gut, it was some crap; gang-banger crap...I just know it," he said.

Jasmine, the distraught father said, was set to start a new job on Friday.

"I'm going to lose my mind. That's my first born; my first born. Man," he said. "She was sweet, a good daughter, a good auntie, a good mother. Always liked working; she always kept a job."

Gutierrez said police believe someone in another vehicle shot Jasmine, however investigators had no description of the second vehicle.

State troopers and Chicago police are looking over surveillance to determine any clues about the second vehicle or the passenger who fled.

The shooting comes as authorities investigate a particularly bloody July 4 weekend in Chicago, where 82 people were shot, 14 fatally.
