SAN FRANCISCO -- Police found a dismembered human body in a suitcase on a busy San Francisco sidewalk Wednesday evening, reports CBS San Francisco.

The gruesome discovery was made in the South of Market neighborhood about two blocks from the headquarters of social media network Twitter. Police had initially responded to a suspicious package report.

The body inside was so mutilated, police called in a medical examiner to determine whether the remains were that of a human or animal, reports the station. Police couldn't say whether the remains were male or female.

Responders also discovered more remains nearby, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. The case is being treated as a homicide, reports the paper.

The roller-type suitcase was reportedly found amid garbage and debris. Homicide detectives were attempting to obtain surveillance footage from nearby businesses and had developed a rough suspect description, reports the paper.

"As far as a scene like this, every homicide we do deal with is always very tragic to the department," San Francisco police officer Grace Gatpandan told the station. "However, this scene is a gruesome scene and out of the ordinary."
