Dennis Rodman to the Knicks: "I can coach"

Former NBA star Dennis Rodman is a man of many interests. He's dabbled in acting, flirted with professional wrestling and dipped his toe in the waters of freelance international diplomacy, famously becoming BFFs with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

Is a return to his basketball roots next?

The ex-NBA bad boy, known to fans as "The Worm," hit up his former Chicago Bulls coach Phil Jackson, now presiding over the New York Knicks' front office, on Twitter with a proposition.

The Knicks announced earlier Monday that they had fired second-year head coach Derek Fisher, who played under Jackson with the Los Angeles Lakers, after losing their last five games and nine of their last 10.

"It's time for us to make a change, turn this team around and move forward and get some wins and keep going down the road we had started here at the beginning of the year," Jackson said at the team's practice facility.

Despite an improved roster from a year ago - notably the addition of impact rookie Kristaps Porzingis - hopes of making the playoffs have been quickly fading, with the team currently sitting at 23-31, five games and four teams between them and the final playoff spot.

Fisher also didn't help himself during training camp, getting into a fight with Memphis Grizzlies forward and former teammate Matt Barnes when he was at the home of Barnes' estranged wife in California, though Jackson downplayed it as a factor in Fisher's firing.

"No one's happy about how that happened and what came out of that," Jackson said. "That was embarrassing for us and for Derek, but that had no nothing to do with what's happened here today."

As for Rodman, who can say if he's seriously throwing his hat in the ring or just joking around with a former coach. There are a number of other candidates that be attractive to Jackson. Former head coaches Tom Thibodeau, Mark Jackson and Brian Shaw all are available. Or Jackson could wait and perhaps make at a run at another of his former players - Luke Walton, who led Golden State to the best start in NBA history while Kerr was recovering from back surgery.

But he said he was not looking at any coaching candidates now, saying he was fully confident in interim coach Kurt Rambis, formerly an associate on Fisher's staff.

"Someone has to match the style of the way we do things and there's a certain style that I have that I think works and I've found worked before," Jackson said. "I don't know if all those people measure up to that, because I don't know them well enough, but that's an important aspect and we'll find that type of person."

If the Knicks' "style of the way we do things" involves dyed hair, plentiful body piercings and tattoos, then they may have their man.
