50-pound dog mauls toddler in Florida

A toddler was hospitalized after being mauled by a 50-pound dog, Florida authorities said Tuesday.

According to statement released by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Tampa Police Detective Jeffrey Harris was interviewing a business owner regarding a car burglary when he noticed a Boxer with something in its mouth.

Harris walked closer and realized that the dog had a child in its mouth. The detective managed to get the dog to release the toddler, and the dog ran away.

The business alerted the child's mother, the police said, and the child was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital. CBS affiliate WTSP reports that the child is in stable condition.

Sheriff's officials identified the child as Michael Diaz who turns 2 next month. The sheriff's office reports the dog belongs to the boy's family.

Animal Services has also responded to the scene.

WTSP reports that police were seeking to impound the Boxer's puppies:
