Family of S.C. teen suing over death on ropes course

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The family of a Florida teen has sued over her death at a high ropes course last summer.

Court records show a lawsuit filed in January against Young Life Inc. and Adventure Experiences Inc. by relatives of 16-year-old Olivia Paige Grimes was transferred Monday from Florida to federal court in South Carolina, where the course was located. Mediation is set next month.

Authorities say the Lakeland, Florida, teen died in July after falling more than 100 feet from a swing at Carolina Point Camp in Sunset on the South Carolina-North Carolina state line.

Grimes was participating in an event called "Freebird" with other teenagers. She was seated in a large pendulum swing - along with two other people - when she fell, CBS affiliate WSPA reported.

Deputies say the camp offers a week-long program that provides team building activities for teenagers.

Deputies said Grimes was not strapped into the apparatus but that they had found no evidence of foul play or mechanical failure.

South Carolina labor officials said the camp had no permit for the ropes course.
