Birthday party cut short when family says they found scissors in cake

ARLINGTON, Texas-- An Arlington, Texas family cut a surprise party short after finding an unwanted surprise-- inside the birthday cake.

A family claims to have found a pair of scissors buried inside the $59.99 birthday cake they purchased for the party, reports CBS Dallas-Fort Worth.

"Everybody was here sitting down. We were all around the table and we see the pair of scissors and we're like, 'Whoa!' I was just very disappointed," said Yoly Nava, who purchased the cake.

The family says the surprise birthday party was for Nava's mother. Nava said a friend spotted the blades just as the crowd began to shout, "mordida." It's a tradition in the Latino culture were the person being celebrated usually dives face first into the cake, reports CBS Dallas-Fort Worth.

"What if those scissors would have been pointed up and I would have hurt my mom? Trying to make something good, I would have hurt my mom," said Nava.

Nava was angry, so she posted a video on Facebook to warn other folks what had just happened to her family.

The family says the cake was purchased from the El Rancho Market in Arlington. According to CBS Dallas-Fort Worth, a manager at the corporate office called Nava to apologize and try to make it up to the family.

Nava tells CBS Dallas-Fort Worth she does not want anything to do with the store and hopes the company makes changes on how it trains employees so it does not happen again.

"I think it's enough. Scissors to me, that could have been an eye or something," said Nava.

Managers at El Rancho Market did not want to comment and referred request to their corporate office. Calls to the company by CBS Dallas-Fort Worth were not returned.
