Moderate earthquakes shake Bay Area

CONCORD, Calif. -- A series of earthquakes shook the eastern Bay Area on Sunday, shaking buildings, but doing no real damage.

CBS San Francisco reports the temblor had a magnitude of about 4.0 and struck about 2:13 p.m., with the epicenter about a mile south of Concord, Calif. It was the second notable quake to occur in the state on the same day.

A small earthquake rattled Greater Los Angeles on Sunday morning, shaking buildings and waking residents. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in that incident either.

The Los Angeles Times reported much of the Los Angeles basin and areas to the east felt the shaking.

It was the second earthquake in less than a month along the Newport-Inglewood fault. A magnitude-3.5 quake hit the same area on April 12.

Last August, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake rocked the San Francisco Bay area, centered in the Napa Valley, but felt across Northern California. The quake was the strongest in the region since 1989.
