Video captures moments before boaters were saved from sinking vessel
MARINA DEL REY, Calif. -- Authorities say 12 people were rescued Sunday from the ocean after their boat sank near Marina del Rey, CBS Los Angeles reports.
Several agencies responded to the scene about a mile out from Dockweiler State Beach after the U.S. Coast Guard received a report of a sinking boat just before 5 p.m.
Darci Tormey, one of the boaters, posted video which captured the moments before their rescue.
"I think that's when it started to sink in, when people started to panic," said Tormey, who was among the dozen who were in a 35-foot speed boat when it started taking on water.
While in a life vest about a mile and a half from shore and in the ocean, Tormey posted video on Snapchat.
The minutes before had felt like seconds. A friend on board called the Coast Guard for help but she says the back of the boat started sinking.
"We went on top of the roof of the boat to put weight towards the front," she said.
It was no use.
"So the nose of the boat was up like this and we slid into the water," she said. "You couldn't hold on to anything and the boat is going into the water too. So when the boat went into the water, we did too."
That's where the Coast Guard and Sheriff's rescuers found them and took them back to Marina del Rey.
