Illinois judge injured in courtroom scuffle

MAYWOOD, Ill. - Authorities say a defendant broke free after his hearing in a Cook County, Ill. courtroom and attacked the judge, reports CBS Chicago.

Police say defendant Michael Ganter punched Judge Geary Kull several times in the face. He reportedly broke free from deputies who were escorting him past the bench and back to the lockup. He was not handcuffed, according to the station.

"Judge Kull told me that he was pummeled by this gentleman," Cook County Chief Judge Tim Evans told the station.

Ganter was reportedly subdued by a stun gun and one of the gun's prongs also hit the judge.

An investigation is underway into how things were handled.

Judge Kull was scheduled to return to the bench on Friday.
