Police: Wisc. teen killed after Facebook feud over girl
MILWAUKEE - A 14-year-old boy was fatally shot Friday in a dispute that started with a fight over a girl on Facebook, police say.
The shooting occurred about 10:30 p.m. police say, just after a nearby fireworks display ended on Milwaukee's lakefront. Teams of officers worked to resuscitate the victim and got a pulse, but he died later at Froedert Hospital.
Police Chief Ed Flynn says eight or nine shots were fired, with one of them hitting the teen, identified as 14-year-old Tariq Akbar, in the head. He expressed frustration with the easy access young people have to firearms and their recourse to deadly violence over affronts.
There were no immediate arrests. A police statement says preliminary information indicates the victim was among a group of individuals who were feuding with another group on Facebook over a girl.
The victim's brother, who has not been named, was taken into custody, according to police and family. The Milwuakee Journal-Sentinel reports he was being held for a "probation violation." They say he is not a person of interest in the shooting.
Arifah Akbar, Tariq Akbar's mother, told CBS affiliate WDJT in Milwuakee she is upset her son is being held by police because he had nothing to do with the shooting. The family also insists that Tariq Akbar was not involved in any disputes, but was instead in the wrong place at the wrong time.
