Grateful Dead fan critically hurt in fall at farewell show

CHICAGO - Police say a man was critically hurt in a fall at a Grateful Dead concert at Chicago's Soldier Field.

Chicago Police Department spokesman Officer Hector Alfaro says police were called around 9 p.m. Sunday after a 41-year-old man fell at least 20 feet from a railing where he was sitting inside the stadium. Police say it appeared to be an accident.

The Chicago Tribune reports the man was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Police said early Monday morning that his condition had stabilized.

The band played three shows at Soldier Field over the holiday weekend and has said Sunday's would be their last as the Grateful Dead.

In a news release, Soldier Field said 71,000 tickets were sold for Sunday night's show and that this is the most sold for any event at the stadium. Soldier Field reported that 70,844 tickets were sold for Saturday's show, and that fans bought 70,764 tickets for Friday's show. Soldier Field says the previous record was 67,936 tickets sold for a U2 concert in 2009.
