9-year-old girl wounded in Baltimore shooting

BALTIMORE -- Police say a 9-year-old girl was playing on the steps of her Baltimore home when she was shot Sunday afternoon, reports CBS Baltimore.

The victim survived and is being treated at a hospital for a broken femur. Investigators say the suspect was aiming for a group of four young men at around 1 p.m., when he instead wounded the girl.

The shooter and the intended victims all fled the scene, according to police. Police have not identified a suspect in the attack.

During a press conference on Sunday afternoon, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake expressed frustration that another young child was injured in a neighborhood already marred by gun violence. The shooting happened just blocks away from where 3-year-old McKenzie Elliot was gunned down while playing on her front porch on Aug. 1, 2014.

"Come forward with information because that's the only way police is going to be able to get these individuals off of our streets," said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. "It's the only way we're going to be able to have a safer community and insure more young people, more of our children, don't become victims."
