Mural painter falls to death after scaffolding collapses at Fla. high-rise

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- Authorities say a mural painter fell four stories to his death at a high-rise condominium under construction in South Florida.

The Sun Sentinel reported that scaffolding collapsed Monday afternoon at the Hyde Resort & Residences in Hollywood.

Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue Division Chief Lori Williams says two other men also fell in the accident, but their safety harnesses prevented fatal injuries.

“I heard a lot of commotion and the sounds of distress on the side of building as two guys were dangling and one already fell,” said construction worker Antwan Green told CBS Miami

Hollywood Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Christopher Del Campo says they’re trying to determine if there was a problem with a wire or mechanical difficulties with the scaffold.

Authorities weren’t immediately naming the deceased man or his colleagues.

Police say the mural was designed by Douglas Hoekzema, also known as Hoxxoh.

Hollywood Fire Inspectors, Hollywood Police and OSHA (The Occupational Safety and Health Administration) are investigating the incident.
