Few leads in slaying of Indiana teen track star

GARY, Ind. - Police say they have no clues to who shot and killed a 15-year-old Gary, Ind. girl while she was going to visit the home of a friend's grandmother.

Daja Brookshire was shot in the back in a drive-by shooting, Gary police Lt. Thomas Pawlak said. She was pronounced dead at 11:37 p.m. Sunday at Methodist Northlake Hospital in Gary, Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey said.

The teen was a track star at Gary's West Side High School, reports CBS Chicago.

The shooting occurred as Brookshire, her boyfriend and a female friend were getting out of the boy's car outside the grandmother's home. Pawlak says the other two were uninjured.

Pawlak said police never had any contact with Brookshire, her boyfriend or her friend in the past.

"They were good kids," Pawlak told the (Munster) Times."There was no reason for them to be targeted. They've been friends since the sixth grade."

The boyfriend and friend told police they noticed a vehicle following them for some time but did not see the make or model of the vehicle or the people inside.

"It's really sad. We have this 15-year-old girl, a true, real victim," Sgt. Tom Decanter of the Gary Police told the station. "We've got to get it taken care of."

Police reportedly haven't identified a suspect and investigators are hoping the public can help find her killer. Anyone with information is asked to call Gary police.
