Ex-Chris Christie aide in "Bridgegate" scandal gets resentencing date
A onetime aide to former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will be resentenced next month for her role in the George Washington Bridge lane-closing scandal. A judge set sentencing this week for March 29 for Bridget Kelly.
Kelly, the former deputy chief of staff to Christie, was sentenced two years ago to 18 months in prison for the plot to create traffic jams in 2013 to punish a mayor who didn't endorse Christie.
An appeals court threw out civil rights convictions against Kelly and co-defendant Bill Baroni last fall but upheld the most serious counts and ordered a resentencing.
Kelly was the author of the infamous "time for traffic problems in Fort Lee" email a month before access lanes to the bridge were realigned without notice to the town.
The four days of gridlock paralyzed Fort Lee and the subsequent fallout became known as "Bridgegate."
Christie wasn't charged, but the scandal damaged his chances for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016. At her trial, testimony by Kelly and others contradicted Christie's account of when and what he knew about the traffic jams.
A judge this week reduced Baroni's sentence from 24 months to 18 months.
Kelly is pursuing an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
