Grisly find near S.F. Bay Bridge sparks investigation
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Authorities on Wednesday afternoon were investigating the discovery of a human torso on rocks near the eastern end of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, CBS San Francisco reports.
The discovery was reported shortly after noon, the police said.
The headless and limbless torso was first spotted by a construction worker on his lunch break. The man was walking along the rocks near the Oakland landing of the bridge.
He was taking photos of San Francisco Bay when he looked down and saw the torso just above the water line.
Homicide investigators who arrived at the scene said the torso had been in the water for at least a month and was probably on the rocks for a couple of days.
Authorities said they think it is from the body of a young male, but that was all they could determine so far.
Considering how dramatically the tides and currents move water around the bay, investigators will start by asking for some help.
"We have multiple agencies around the Bay Area, so we'll work with them to determine do they have a missing person, is this a suicide, is this an accident, or is there a crime connected to this particular torso," Oakland Police Department spokesperson Johnna Watson said.
Authorities said other evidence was collected at the scene. The coroner is now in possession of those remains.
Investigators will immediately conduct a DNA test in the event the remains are possibly linked to an open case.
