North Korea standoff, federal budget battle, and Big Labor's backing
“Extremely dangerous”
North Korea conducted a large-scale, live-fire military drill today in yet another show of force as the U.S. conducted its own drills with South Korea. Meanwhile, the USS Carl Vinson naval strike group is making its way to the divided peninsula. One analyst warns the tension could lead the U.S. to “stumble needlessly” into a military crisis.
Budget battle
Congress has just four days left to reach an agreement on federal funding or the government will shut down. For now, one major hurdle in the path to a federal budget deal has been put aside; until this week the biggest sticking point had been funding for President Trump’s border wall, but the White House is conceding on that demand. There are, of course, other areas of significant disagreement.
Labor backing
When President Donald Trump faced the North America Building Trades Union, he got a warm reception, and union support helped propel him to the presidency. But Mr. Trump’s warm reception at the builders conference underscored yet another strange political reality under the new president: organized labor, traditionally staunchly Democratic, now finds itself in a delicate dance with a Republican White House.
Ivanka in Germany
Ivanka Trump is in Germany, but it is no ordinary trip by an ordinary White House official; it is in fact three visits in one. On the face of it, the president’s daughter is in Berlin for a high-powered conference aimed at promoting the role of working women, but some say Angela Merkel’s invitation was intended to open a side door into the White House.
Childhood vaccines
Vaccines have made huge inroads in reducing deaths from preventable diseases such as measles, whooping cough and polio, but doctors say too many U.S. kids still aren’t getting all their shots. A new report looks at which states have the best vaccination rates, and why some others are falling short.
Apple stores
Apple’s highest-ranking female executive, Angela Ahrendts, became senior vice president of retail in 2014 after working as CEO of Burberry. She’s overseen the Apple stores’ most significant redesign since they opened. Ahrendts takes “CBS This Morning” inside the stores to explain Apple’s perspective on the future of retail.
Targeting seniors
Financial fraud targeting older Americans is rampant. Scammers use a variety of tricks to pry money and confidential information from their victims. One defense against these schemes is simply recognizing the persuasion tactics fraudsters use against the elderly.
