Man arrested in theft of $141,000 left behind by ATM workers

MAHWAH, N.J. -- Police say they've arrested one of two men who they say made off with a bag containing $141,000 in cash after two employees filling ATMs left it on a northern New Jersey lawn.

Authorities arrested 42-year-old Alton Harvey on Wednesday afternoon in Irvington. Authorities are also looking for 35-year-old Jamar Bludson.

Mahwah police say the ATM employees stopped at a business when one of them placed the satchel on the lawn as he moved items around in their vehicle. They drove off, forgetting the bag.

CBS New York reported that surveillance video showed the costly mistake made by employees at ATMForUs.com in Mahwah. In the video, a worker is seen leaving a building at 31 Industrial Avenue. Police said he was reloading ATMs and was carrying $141,000 in a small, unmarked bag.

He sets the satchel down and walks around to the back of his car before getting in and taking off. The bag, filled with $10s and $20s, was left behind on the lawn, police said.

Surveillance video then shows a passenger of a white work van picking up the bag full of money and driving away. Police said surveillance video from an automotive business across the street shows the same van grabbing discarded tires from a dumpster just minutes before their big pay day.

It's unclear if Harvey has an attorney who could comment on the charges. He's being held at the Bergen County Jail in lieu of $125,000 bail.
