Blimp makes emergency landing on New York's Long Island

A blimp made an emergency landing on New York's Long Island Thursday.

Nassau County police told CBS News that the blimp's pilot wasn't injured while landing in a field behind a school in Farmingdale, New York.

The pilot was the only person onboard, the police said.

The pilot was attempting to land at Long Island's Republic Airport but was having mechanical problems, the police said.

Caleb Walsh with AirSign, the Florida-based aerial advertising firm operating the blimp, told CBS New York there was a change in the weather and that the pilot feared the conditions would prevent the blimp from reaching the airport.

Walsh told CBS New York the blimp was flying for three hours at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in Manhattan and was returning to Long Island to refuel. It was advertising the Manhattan Institute, a health care training school.

The 150-foot-long, 45-foot-tall blimp was not damaged, Walsh said.
