Police say intoxicated driver sideswipes officers arresting 2nd drunk driver

MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Two Macomb County Sheriff's deputies in Michigan were making an alleged drunken driving arrest when their patrol cars were sideswiped by another alleged drunk driver, reports CBS Detroit.

The incident happened early Saturday morning and was captured on dashcam video.

Sheriff Anthony Wickersham tells CBS Detroit dispatchers had been on the look-out for a possible drunk driver in a blue Ford Mustang. A deputy spotted the suspect, made a traffic stop, and a second deputy arrived to assist.

The driver, a 20-year-old from Sterling Heights, Michigan, was arrested.

Wickersham said while the man was sitting in the back seat of the patrol car speaking with deputies a second intoxicated driver sped by in a Mercury Mountaineer. The driver sideswiped the two Sheriff's cars before slamming in to the Mustang, pushing it into a ditch.

The Mountaineer came to rest in a ditch and the driver, another 20-year-old male, was arrested.

CBS Detroit reports that Wickersham said both underage drinkers were taken to the Macomb County Jail where they were given breathalyzer tests. Each had an identical blood alcohol content (BAC) of .17 percent.

No one was hurt, but Wickersham said one of the patrol cars that was struck had to be taken out-of-service due to the damage.

Both drivers are charged with OWI (Operating While Intoxicated) with high BAC, first offense.

The names of the drivers have not been released.
