Student shot on Georgia college campus dies

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- A student shot at the student union of Savannah State University Thursday night died at a local hospital, the school says.

Loretta Heyward, a spokesperson for the Georgia school, said in a statement early Friday that Christopher Starks, a junior from the metro Atlanta area, was the only person taken to the hospital after what she called the "altercation."

No arrests had been made at the time of her statement.

Because the university is a state institution, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is handling the ongoing investigation with assistance from campus police, she added.

Grief counselors will be available on campus Friday, and classes won't begin until 10 a.m., Heyward said.

The shooting prompted a lockdown that was lifted around midnight, but security remained tight.

A school official told CBS Savannah, Georgia affiliate WTOC-TV the front gate had re-opened, but with restricted access. There were mandatory ID checks for people in vehicles entering campus and searches of vehicles leaving. Students living on-campus were encouraged to stay in place.
