Khorasan threat

Sources confirm to CBS News correspondent Bob Orr that an al Qaeda cell going by the name "Khorasan,"unlike ISIS, is not fighting for territory. It's developing fresh plots to target U.S. aviation, and trying to recruit Westerners who have flocked to the fight in Syria. The fear is U.S. and European passport holders could more easily smuggle explosives onto airplanes.

Manhunt

There was a killer on the loose Wednesday night, and police say Eric FreinEric Frein is now a federal fugitive. He's accused of ambushing two Pennsylvania state troopers Friday night, shooting them with a rifle. One died. Police describe Frein as a self-trained survivalist. They say he is heavily armed and extremely dangerous. CBS News correspondent Don Dahler reports police say Frein may be hunting the officers hunting him.

Mr. Poroshenko goes to Washington

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has meetings in Washington today with President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry. At the invitation of House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, he'll also deliver an address before a joint meeting of Congress this morning. By granting this level of attention, American lawmakers are sending a clear signal to the world, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Another arrest

Arizona Cardinals running back Jonathan Dwyer was arrested yesterday on charges of aggravated assault, criminal damage and preventing someone from calling 911, Phoenix police said. The allegations stem from two separate alleged incidents at his southeast Phoenix home in late July, Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump told CBS Phoenix affiliate KPHO-TV.

Independence vote

The polls are too close to call as Scotland votes today on whether to become an independent country. The final result is due to be announced Friday but, as CBS News correspondent Mark Phillips reports from the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, passions are running high as the vote begins.

Skip Alibaba

Aside from the normal disadvantage that people face when it comes to IPO investing, e-commerce giant Alibaba has some particular twists that make the stock an undesirable choice for the retail investor, according to a number of experts who spoke with CBS MoneyWatch. Here are their reasons to sit this one out, at least for now.

Quiet killer

Most people are familiar with the two leading causes of death in the U.S., heart disease and cancer, but few would even guess the third: sepsis. It is often mistaken for something else, like the flu. Unfortunately, it can move quickly, and every hour of delay in treatment increases the risk of death. However, as CBS News correspondent Vinita Nair reports, one family's crusade is trying to save lives from this quiet killer.

Part-time work

It's hard enough to become an NFL player, but it's harder to become an NFL referee. Surprisingly, being an NFL official is a part-time gig. It's takes a lot to get there and stay there. CBS News correspondent Mark Strassmann gives a rare behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to become an NFL referee.

"Death positivity"

30-year-old Caitlin Doughty is not your average undertaker. She built a following as a death expert through her YouTube video series called "Ask a Mortician," and is now on a mission to encourage Americans to face their own mortality more openly and honestly -- what she calls "death positivity."

Artists undiscovered

Museum curators Don Bacigalupi and Chad Alligood were on a mission: find America's hidden artists. The search took the team to 174 cities in 44 states, and to unique locations, from goat farms in Florida to an old school building in Kansas. CBS News' Anna Werner caught up to the team when they stopped by to see Randy Regier in Wichita, Kansas. He was number 960 on their nine-month odyssey.
