Marine Corps to remove word "man" from 19 key job titles

The U.S. military is swiftly moving women into all roles, including combat. As the change in policy has unfolded during the last few years, it has been met with resistance, most notably by the Marine Corps.

However, it appears the Marine Corps brass have relented, and are even changing the titles on many of the jobs it appears women are expected to begin filling.

The Marine Corps Times reports "the Marine Corps plans to rename 19 of its military occupational specialties, or MOSs, as the result of a months-long review mandated by Navy Secretary Ray Mabus."

In most cases, the word "man" will be replaced by "Marine." However, several key job posts will remain untouched, like "rifleman" and "mortarman." The Marine Corps Times reports a Marine official who spoke on the condition of anonymity said leaving those particular names alone was not an accident.

The job titles being changed, acccording to the Marine Corps Times, are:

  • Basic infantry Marine.
  • Riverine assault craft Marine.
  • Light-armor vehicle Marine.
  • Reconnaissance Marine (to include three other recon-related jobs that include the word "man").
  • Infantry assault Marine.
  • Basic field artillery Marine.
  • Field artillery fire control Marine.
  • Field artillery sensor support Marine.
  • Fire support Marine.
  • Basic engineer, construction and equipment Marine.
  • Basic tank and assault amphibious vehicle Marine.
  • Armor Marine.
  • Amphibious assault vehicle Marine.
  • Amphibious combat vehicle Marine.
  • Field artillery operations chief
  • Anti-tank missile gunner

The changes have been met with resistance, according to multiple reports, as well as the comment section on stories about them. Most say the new titles are trying too hard to be politically correct.
