Baltimore

The Maryland National Guard deployed into a wounded Baltimore early today, and police are ramping up their presence after getting what they called "a credible threat" from three gangs promising to "take out" officers. But, CBS NewscCorrespondent Chip Reid reports, the city's response left many asking, "What took so long?"

Nepal Quake

Nepalese soldiers loaded supplies onto helicopters today and headed into the remote villages cut off since Saturday's devastating earthquake. Prime Minister Sushil Koirala said the death toll from the disaster -- nearing 5,000 -- could reach double that figure as rescue crews reach the small villages close to the epicenter. CBS News correspondent Holly Williams reports those villages are home to thousands of people who live in buildings constructed without concern for earthquakes. Officials warned that in many places, 90 percent of the homes have likely been leveled.

Highest rescue

The powerful earthquake that jolted Nepal three days ago rattled the world's highest mountain, triggering deadly avalanches that left 18 people dead on Mount Everest's slopes. CBS News correspondent Seth Doane reports that, along with rescue teams from around the world, some of those left with serious injuries on Everest were seen arriving today at the small airport in Kathmandu, Nepal's devastated capital city.

Same-sex marriage

The Supreme Court will hear arguments today over the fundamental question of whether same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry. Already, 36 states and the District of Columbia recognize same-sex marriages.

Eighth dinner

After visiting the Lincoln Memorial together yesterday, President Obama formally meets with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe today at the White House. In the evening, it's on to a state dinner, the eighth of the Obama presidency. White House executive chef Cris Comerford and her staff are busy preparing for the dinner, one that has to be orchestrated with military precision. CBS News senior White House correspondent Bill Plante takes a behind-the-scenes look at the most important meal in town.

Birthrate economics

Here's a recipe for an economic Armageddon: Take a rapidly aging society and a younger generation that's not having kids. The result? An incredible shrinking economy that's also burdened by huge costs to its Social Security and tax systems. That's the grim future for countries such as Japan, where the population is forecast to decline by one-third through 2060. In the U.S., a childbirth trend among Millennials is raising questions about whether some of the same economic pressures could be in store for America.

Later diagnosis

Greater public awareness of autism has made early diagnosis and intervention much more likely. But new research finds this is more often the case for boys than girls. A study being presented today reports girls are getting diagnosed later than boys. Find out why.

Roger Goodell

The NFL draft begins Thursday in Chicago. It's a change of venue for a league re-defining itself on and off the field. The NFL follows a new personal conduct policy, and two new employees will help investigate player misconduct. Also, a federal judge last week approved a concussion lawsuit settlement involving more than 5,000 former players. The deal is expected to cost the NFL more than a billion dollars over 65 years. "CBS News This Morning" co-host Charlie Rose spoke with Goodell, who says the league is simply trying to move on.
