Election 2016 gets more than a billion interactions on Facebook

Facebook users have generated more than 1 billion likes, posts, comments and shares relating to the 2016 presidential election, the social networking site announced Monday.

More than 68 million people - more than one third of 193 million Americans who use the service each month - contributed to the staggering volume of chatter. The average person has posted, commented on, shared or liked content related to the election more than 16 times since the beginning of the year.

Vermont, the home state of Democratic candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, is the most engaged in the election. Next up is Wisconsin, followed by New Jersey, New Hampshire and Arkansas.

Social networks tend to play a heightened role with each passing election cycle. Twitter announced this year that it has partnered with Square, a mobile payment company, to allow users to contribute to political campaigns with a tweet.
